Sonya’s Pithi + Mendhi Celebration | St. Louis Indian Photography

I hope you checked out Mayur’s Vidhi celebration, because we are now moving on to Sonya’s! It’s many of the same traditions, with a few other fun things! Mayur was definitely “cleansed” from his aunties covering him with tumeric. Sonya on the other hand, had it a little easier. Instead of the ladies using their hands, they used little round cotton pads. They seemed to apply it to Sonya “nicely” compared to Mayur. Poor Mayur!

We began the day with some family photos and then started the celebration in the living room. Sonya and her sister stood on short pedestals while they beautified her. All while her lovely aunts filled the room with sweet sounds and songs. Part of the celebration includes going outside to decorate a large pole. It signifies the first wedding structure they bless, in hopes of the wedding ceremony going well. They all lift it together and place it outside the home.

The next tradition is the packing of Sonya’s suitcase by her paternal aunties. This is when everyone begins to tear-up and cry! Including the photographer! We go outside again where her grandfather presents her with her beautiful wedding gown while the rest of the family presents sweets and other small gifts to be used on her wedding day. Her aunts pack the suitcase with items she will need in married life. Then in return, her Mother gives gifts to her aunties for packing it.

Later that evening, another part of preparing and beautifying oneself for the wedding is the Mendhi. It’s a casual night and time to apply the henna! This process is a first for me, so I was so excited to see this. Two amazing artists from Henna Art Designs in St. Charles, MO made the most beautiful designs – each one so different. I guess as unique as the lady who wears it. 🙂 Ryan definitely would want me to end on a note regarding the food. This was probably his favorite part, ha! They always kept him fed! (Thank you!) While the gals had their henna done on the inside, the men had cocktails and food on the patio. They had a tandoor (oven), preparing yummy kabobs and our very first experience with fresh home-made naan. Mmmmmmmmm.

Enjoy the photos! The wedding day is coming soon!

Jane Elizabeth 10 days old | St. Louis Newborn Photography

“One Sunday morning the warm sun came up and – pop! – out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar.”

– Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar

It’s true! Big brother Luke and Mama must have been reading Eric Carle to sweet baby Jane in the womb, because this girl was born on a Sunday! I’m just the lucky gal who got to hold and cuddle her while I photographed her little existence. Hardly a peep out of her the entire time, she was so good. Even Luke (which it’s going to be hard for me not to call him baby Luke anymore!) was pretty good. Siblings are always so hard to throw into the mix – they don’t want any part of it. ha! But it’s nothing a sour cherry ball can’t cure. After a lot of begging and about 7 cherry balls later, he caved, and gave her a sweet.PRECIOUS.kiss. I got a few too… both cherry balls and kisses. 🙂 Of course, he didn’t want to read the book to her in the light I needed, but decided the stairwell was the best place. Well, we rolled with it, and baby Jane slept through it all!

Baby Jane’s mama is soooo talented. I’m always so excited to work with her and to see what outfits and ideas she’s got in mind. She made the adorable felt stump and cute little leaf for the session. She ordered the caterpillar hat and wooly sack on Etsy.

I also wanted to post a photo of the area I got to work in. Since I prefer not to work in a studio, for newborn sessions I work in the convenience of a family’s home. (Makes it easy on Mama not to travel with the little one!) When I request a tidy space with a lot of natural window light, well, this is what I’m talking about. 🙂

Love this little one, hope you love the photos too.

Caroline + Chad | St. Louis Wedding Photography

I’ve been sooooo busy editing portraits + weddings, that I haven’t really shown a real wedding for a while! 😉 This one is really special to me. It’s been 6 years since I’ve photographed my first wedding at The Conservatory in St. Charles! So when I met with Caroline and Chad to talk BIG-day shop, I could hardly contain my excitement. Not only does it have all natural light 🙂 it’s really beautiful, especially for an intimate guest count. Come to find out, the venue is not just special to me, but to this sweet couple too! They met at a wedding there! Just a few pews apart… Love that.

We finished the day at SqWires in their awesome annex. Very industrial chic. 🙂 Which I think is going to be the new trend for 2013. I’m already hearing the words tossed around like “vintage!”

While I was editing the photos, I kept noticing Caroline’s Dad’s smile and those cute little eye wrinkles (heart!). He was always smiling ear to ear in.every.picture., and I can’t help but feel the same when I look at these photos.

Enjoy some of my favorites. Thanks so much for being such a great couple to work with!

The Knot Missouri / Kansas Magazine Feature

We’ve got some exciting news around here that I have been dying to share! We are featured in The Knot Missouri / Kansas Spring + Summer 2013 edition! Yipppppeee! Such an honor to be in a shiny glossy magazine that sits at our local Barnes & Noble, anxiously awaiting a fab bride to pick it up. The cover features one of my all time favorites, the incredible Elizabeth Messina. Love her so!

You might remember my fun couple Kate + Joel’s Crystal Gardens wedding, jam-packed with pretty details. The amazing Kate and her sweet carpenter hubby added their artistic touch to pretty much everything in that wedding. If you missed the photos you can view my blog post here. I’m 100% sure her ideas will inspire Pinterest followers. 🙂

Show The Knot some love – go grab the latest issue and see for yourself how beautiful it is. Heart!
